iSIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK
BEACH TO BUSH ESCAPES
iSimangaliso Wetland Park is South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most ecologically diverse protected areas in Africa.
Located on the north-eastern coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, iSimangaliso stretches from the
Mozambique border in the north to Maphelane in the south, protecting a rare combination of
wetlands, coastal forests, lakes, coral reefs, beaches, and savannah within a single conservation area.
The name iSimangaliso means “miracle and wonder” in isiZulu — an accurate description of a park where hippos share estuaries with crocodiles, turtles nest on protected beaches, and marine life thrives just offshore.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional biodiversity and conservation value.
The park protects:
Africa’s largest estuarine system (Lake St Lucia), and Critical wetlands supporting migratory bird species
Few places in the world combine marine and terrestrial conservation at this scale.
